Sports Minister Hugh Robertson today praised the 2012 Operations Team in Dorset for their efforts to use the Olympic and Paralympic sailing events to showcase the local area to the world to boost tourism and inward investment and leave a lasting legacy.

The Dorset Media Centre has been officially launched and journalists from across the world were invited to register to use the facility during this summer’s Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Located next to the beach in Weymouth and overlooking three of the sailing competition courses the centre offers a unique backdrop and a well-resourced and networked base for journalists to report on all the action and local celebrations. The Media Centre has been dressed in the iconic local image of the Jurassic Coast to demonstrate how it will also showcase the very best of Dorset to the world.

Weymouth and Portland is the largest Olympic and Paralympic venue outside of London and up to 60,000 spectators and visitors are expected to be in the Borough each day. The sailing competition will take place in front of the stunning backdrop of the World Heritage Jurassic Coast - a first in Games history.

Minister for Sport and the Olympics, Hugh Robertson said: “I’m sure that Weymouth will put on a fantastic Olympic and Paralympic sailing competition with a wide range of events on top of the sport for both residents and visitors to enjoy. The Dorset Media Centre will be used to communicate this across the world putting local attractions in the spotlight and helping to attract tourists to the area.”

The Dorset Media Centre is centrally located in Weymouth’s Pavilion complex overlooking the beach and backdrop of the World Heritage Jurassic Coast. Media services will include:

  • A media platform offering stunning views across Weymouth beach and the World Heritage Jurassic Coast
  • Access to a library of material about the 2012 sailing events and other local information - including local photographic and broadcast material, facts and figures etc
  • Access to information about Dorset attractions and itineraries to explore the area from Weymouth

Entry and use of the media centre facilities will be free of charge but only for those pre-registered. To register media must complete the expressions of interest/registration form at www.dorsetforyou.com/london2012/mediacentre
