Minister for Small Business, Industry and Enterprise


The minister is responsible for:

  • business sectors (excluding construction and rail) and advanced manufacturing, including low carbon economy
  • enterprise
  • competiveness and economic growth, including economic opportunities and shocks
  • Business Bank and access to finance
  • Green Investment Bank
  • deregulation and better regulation
  • local and regional growth
  • export control
  • Royal Mail and the public data group
  • insolvency

Until May 2015 this role was known as the Minister for Business and Enterprise.

Current role holder: The Rt Hon Anna Soubry MP

Rt Hon Anna Soubry was appointed Minister of State (Minister for Small Business, Industry and Enterprise) for the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills on 11 May 2015. She was elected Conservative MP for Broxtowe in 2010 and re-elected in May 2015.


She studied law at Birmingham University and went on to train as a barrister.

Political career

Anna was appointed Minister of State at the Ministry of Defence on 15 July 2014. She was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State and Minister for Defence Personnel, Welfare and Veterans in October 2013. She was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State in the Department of Health in September 2012 having previously served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Health Minister, Simon Burns, from November 2010 to September 2012.

Career outside politics

Anna has worked at Grampian TV in Aberdeen as a reporter and presenter on North Tonight and at Central TV as a reporter on Central News East. During her time at Central, Anna was the shop steward of the National Union of Journalists. She worked as a criminal barrister in Nottingham and practised until becoming an MP.
