Anna Soubry MP

Biography

Anna Soubry MP was appointed Minister of State at the Ministry of Defence on 15 July 2014. She is the Conservative MP for Broxtowe.

Education

She studied law at Birmingham University and went on to train as a barrister.

Political career

Anna was Parliamentary Private Secretary to Health Minister, Simon Burns from November 2010 to September 2012. She was appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State and Minister for Defence Personnel, Welfare and Veterans in October 2013.

Career outside politics

Anna has worked at Grampian TV in Aberdeen as a reporter and presenter on North Tonight and at Central TV as a reporter on Central News East. During her time at Central, Anna was the shop steward of the National Union of Journalists. She worked as a criminal barrister in Nottingham and practised until becoming an MP.

Anna has 2 daughters.

Minister of State for Defence Personnel, Welfare and Veterans

The minister is responsible for the Armed Forces Covenant, legal matters, Defence Infrastructure Organisation (including delivery of the basing strategy), civilian personnel, cadets, veterans and service families.

Priority areas:

  • the Armed Forces Covenant
  • defence infrastructure and delivery of the basing strategy
  • reform of the service justice/complaints process
  • cadets and veterans
  • armed forces personnel policy and issues

Other responsibilities include:

  • public inquiries, inquests and service inquiries policy and casework
  • service charities
  • climate change, environmental issues and PEX(ER) lead
  • medical services
  • Armed Forces Compensation Scheme
  • MDP, DVA
  • civilian personnel
