The Rt Hon Michael Fallon MP


Michael Fallon was appointed Minister for Business and Enterprise in September 2012. In March 2013 he was also appointed as Minister of State for Energy. He has been the Conservative MP for Sevenoaks, Kent, since 1997.


Michael was educated at Epsom College and the University of St Andrews.

Political career

Michael was MP for Darlington from 1983 to 1992. He was a minister in the Department for Education and Science from 1990 to 1992. More recently he has held positions on the Treasury Select Committee and was Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party.

Career outside politics

Michael is a former director of Bannatyne Fitness Ltd (fitness clubs), Quality Care Homes plc (nursing homes), Just Learning Ltd (nurseries), Attendo AB (Scandinavian social and health care) and Tullett Prebon plc (inter-dealing broking).

Personal life

Michael is married and has 2 children.

Minister of State for Business and Energy

The minister is responsible for:

  • business sectors, including low carbon economy, low emission vehicles, electronics
  • competitiveness and economic growth
  • deregulation and better regulation
  • regional and local economic development (including grants for business investment)
  • Olympic legacy

Minister of State for Energy

The Minister of State for Energy supports the Secretary of State for Energy & Climate Change issues and policy related to energy. The portfolio is as follows:

  • Energy Bill
  • Supports the SoS on EMR
  • Security of supply
  • International energy
  • CCS, gas and coal policy
  • Nuclear policy
  • Renewable energy deployment
  • Grid policy including smart grids and network of recharging points
  • Oil and Gas exploration, licensing and revenues
  • Offshore environment and decommissioning
  • Regulation and competition in the energy sector (incl. nuclear)
  • Waste and decommissioning policy for new nuclear
  • Resilience and emergency preparedness
  • Energy Council
  • Coal Authority

Minister for Portsmouth

The minister is responsible for:

  • coordinating work across Whitehall to support jobs and growth in the city and surrounding area
