Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) Draft Strategy for Consultation

This consultation has concluded

Detail of outcome

In 2005 the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) was established as a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) under the Energy Act (2004) to ensure that the UK’s nuclear legacy sites are decommissioned and cleaned up safely, securely, cost-effectively and in ways that protect people and the environment. The Energy Act requires the NDA to review its Strategy at least every 5 years.

The final outcome of this consultation presents the NDA’s current Strategy, setting out our strategic direction and long-term objectives.

We have also published the Integrated Impact Assessment (IIA) and Post-Adoption Statement with a Non-Technical Summary. These documents identify environmental, socio-economic and health impacts of implementing our strategy.

Detail of feedback received

The Draft Strategy and its associated Integrated Impact Assessment (IIA) were published for a 12 week public consultation between August and November 2020. We received 77 sets of feedback on both documents from a wide range of stakeholders, including individuals, public bodies and private organisations. The feedback received in relation to the IIA is discussed in the Post-Adoption Statement.

Of the 71 responses received for the consultation on the Draft Strategy, the majority answered the consultation questions, whilst also providing a general response. These answers and responses were considered in developing the Strategy submitted for approval and they are covered in the Stakeholder Response Report.

Consultation description

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) has today published its fourth Draft Strategy and begun a 12-week public consultation.

The NDA regularly reviews its Strategy to ensure it has the right approach to decommissioning its 17 nuclear sites and benefits from the latest learning, best practice and can continue to deliver value for the taxpayer.

The 12-week public consultation started on 17 August, during which we welcome any comments, questions or feedback from our stakeholders.

Due to the current Government guidance around social distancing, we will be holding a series of virtual meetings and briefings, and a bespoke virtual stakeholder event mid-way through the consultation period - where stakeholders will have the opportunity to discuss the details with authors of the draft strategy.

These responses will be considered in developing the final Strategy - which will be submitted for approval to UK and Scottish Government, ahead of publication by April 2021.
