Consultation description

MGN 588 (F): Compulsory Provision and Wearing of Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs) on Fishing Vessels, sets out requirements surrounding the provision and wearing of PFDs on fishing vessels and the duties of owners, skippers and fishermen under Convention 188 - International Labour Organisation Convention on Work in Fishing (ILO188).

This amendment proposes to alter the text of MGN 588 to highlight the performance levels of PFDs and minimum accepted performance levels for inflatable PFDs on fishing vessels. It specifies that PFDs with secondary donning are not acceptable, and that PFDs must always be worn in accordance with the manufacturer’s instruction, for example with regard to crotch straps. The amendment also specifies the acceptability of other types of wearable buoyancy devices.
