The Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and the PACE codes of practice provide the core framework of police powers and safeguards around stop and search, arrest, detention, investigation, identification and interviewing detainees.

PACE sets out to strike the right balance between the powers of the police and the rights and freedoms of the public. Maintaining that balance is a central element of PACE.

Completed consultations and responses

Following the consultation on the draft revised versions of codes of practice A, B, E and F and the consultation on PACE codes C and H, revised codes for A, B, E and F and C and H came into effect from 27 October 2013.

Following the 2014 consultation on the draft revised versions of codes of practice C and H, revised codes for C and H came into effect from 2 June 2014.

Following the outcome of the 2014 consultation on PACE Code A this revised Code A was laid before Parliament on 5 December 2014. The code will not come into force until later in 2015, 21 after the Draft Order laid with the Code is made following Parliamentary approval.

Current PACE codes

The latest versions of the codes are available below:

  • code A came into effect on 27 October 2013
  • codes B, E and F came into effect on 27 October 2013
  • codes C and H came into effect on 2 June 2014
  • code D came into effect on 7 March 2011
  • code G came into effect on 13 November 2012

The latest version of the College of Policing Authorised Professional Practice on detention and custody is published on the College of Policing website under Authorised Professional Practice in the detention and custody section.
