Evaluation of the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme and the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme

HM Treasury and HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) are evaluating the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme and the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme.

The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme evaluation plan has been published.

Self-employment data necessary to carry out a full Self-Employment Income Support Scheme evaluation will not be available until 2022, upon HMRC’s receipt of Self Assessment returns.

The Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme was launched on 20 April 2020.

Publication of management information

Between 23 April and 13 December 2020 HMRC published regular management information on this page.

Comprehensive monthly Official Statistics are now published for the scheme. We have therefore brought this reporting together, and to avoid duplication HMRC no longer publish these figures separately.

Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme Official Statistics

Monthly experimental statistics that provide estimates of the number and value of claims made to the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme to HMRC.

We have removed some releases of the CJRS statistics from this page to make it easier for users to find statistics on the scheme.

All previously published monthly statistics are available to view on The National Archives.

Together the releases below provide final figures for the scheme. The August 2020 release provides figures for March to June 2020, December 2020 release for July to October 2020, 1 July 2021 release for November 2020 to April 2021 and 16 December 2021 release for May to September 2021.

Self-Employment Income Support Scheme

Claims for the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme scheme began on 13 May 2020.

Publication of management information

Between 13 May and 13 December 2020 HMRC published regular management information on this page which covered the number and value of claims made to the scheme.

Comprehensive monthly Official Statistics are now published for the scheme. We have therefore removed the management information from this page.

Self-Employment Income Support Scheme Official Statistics

Monthly experimental statistics that show the number of individuals claiming the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme grant, and the value of these claims. The information includes:

  • age of claimants
  • gender of claimants
  • sector of self-employment activity
  • geography

Eat Out to Help Out Scheme

Registrations for the Eat Out to Help Out Scheme began on 13 July 2020, and closed for new claims on 30 September 2020.

Publication of management information

During July and August 2020, HMRC published weekly management information on this page which covered:

  • the number of registered individual premises
  • the number and value of claims made

Comprehensive Official Statistics have since been published for the scheme.

Official statistics

This Official Statistics publication covers the number and value of claims made to the Eat Out to Help Out Scheme up to 30 September 2020, after which the scheme closed for new claims.

A geographic breakdown of the Eat Out to Help Out statistics for businesses with 25 or fewer outlets has also been published.

VAT payments deferral scheme

The VAT payments deferral scheme was launched on 20 March 2020 and ended on 30 June 2020.

The figures below cover:

  • the number of payments eligible for deferral
  • the number of payments deferred by businesses
  • the amount of VAT deferred

To note:

  • this table has been updated to include the number of payments eligible, based on payment returns submitted by 31 December 2020
  • figures are based on payments due between 20 March 2020 and 30 June 2020 for return liability periods ending February 2020 through to July 2020, in line with the scheme criteria
  • number and amount of VAT payments deferred are based on taxpayers with outstanding return payment liabilities as at 30 June 2020
  • the majority of the amounts in the final row relate to instalment payments for Payment on Account taxpayers
  • this is the final data refresh on payments deferred through this scheme as the scheme has now closed
