Employment for people with learning disabilities remains a challenge within WELEP with our combined authorities reporting low employment rates in 2016-17 for the 2585 people reported to be in receipt of short or long term support (SALT measures). Although some progression has been made in terms of education/ skills pathway, including supported internships, our experience is consistent with the wider evidence base, in that with only 6.7% in some sort of work, for many adults with learning disabilities, local intensive specialist and targeted support is needed to support people identify, achieve and maintain a job.
Similarly, very few people have been supported to explore self-employment or start their own business.
Although the term learning disability encompasses a wider range of people and a variety of support needs, the personalised nature of intended support will ensure efficient and effective use of resources to increase the employment rate
