Cancellations, refunds and getting documents back

Get help from UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) if you need to:

get your passport or other documents back from UKVI
cancel your application
get a refund of your application fee after cancelling

You may not need to cancel your application to get your documents back. You will be told if you have to do this when you ask for your documents back.

Get your documents back from UKVI

You will get your passport and other documents back after you get a decision on your application.

If you need them sooner, you can usually fill in a form to get your documents back urgently. The form explains who can use it and how to get your documents back.

If you have not received your documents after 10 days

Report that you have not received your documents if both of the following apply:

you have submitted the form
your documents have not been returned after 10 working days

Cancel your application and check if you can get a refund

You can only cancel an application if you’re still waiting for a decision.

Whether you can get a refund on any fees you have paid depends on when you cancelled your application.

For example, you will not usually get a refund if you cancel after submitting your fingerprints and photo (biometric information).

You can:

check if you can get a refund before you cancel
cancel your application online - you do not need to contact UKVI

Getting a refund of your application fee

After you’ve cancelled your application, you do not have to do anything to get a refund of your application fee.

If you are eligible for a refund, you will get one automatically within 28 days of cancelling.

It will be paid to the account or card you paid with.

You can also check if you can get a refund of any other fees you have paid. For example, the Immigration Health Surcharge or the ‘priority service’ fee for a faster decision.

Contact UKVI if either:

your bank account has changed since you applied
it has been more than 28 days since you cancelled and you have not been given a refund
