You do not need a UK visa or electronic travel authorisation (ETA) if you are a dual British or Irish citizen

As a dual citizen, you can travel to the UK using either:

  • a valid UK passport or Irish passport
  • any other valid passport with a certificate of entitlement - this could be digital or a vignette sticker

In some circumstances, you may also be able to travel with:

  • an expired UK passport
  • another passport or national identity card (if you got British citizenship after settling in the UK under the EU Settlement Scheme)

You can check if you’re a British citizen or Irish citizen. If you’re not a British citizen, you’ll need a visa or ETA instead.

When you can travel with an expired UK passport

Your carrier (for example your airline) may allow you to travel if you have both:

It is the carrier’s decision whether to allow you to travel.

If you previously had a UK passport, you can apply for an emergency travel document.

When you can travel with another passport or national identity card

If you got British citizenship after settling in the UK under the EU Settlement Scheme, you can travel to the UK using a valid:

  • passport of your other nationality
  • national identity card from the EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland
