Check someone's driving licence information
You can use this service to check someone’s driving licence information, for example, vehicles they can drive or any penalty points or disqualifications.
This service is also available in Welsh (Cymraeg).
Check someone’s driving licence online
You need:
- the last 8 characters of their driving licence number
- a check code from the driver
You must use the code within 21 days. You can only use the code once - you have to get another code to do another check.
Use a different service if you want to view your own driving record or generate a check code.

You must have the correct information from the driver to do a check.
It’s a criminal offence to obtain someone else’s personal information without their permission.

You can call DVLA for help if you’ve got all of the following:
- permission from the person to make the check
- a check code from the person you want to check
- the last 8 characters of their driving licence number

Do a check by phone using the premium rate number
You can make a check by phone if you don’t have a check code to use with the online service.
Ask the driver you’re doing the check on to call DVLA and leave permission for the check.

You can then call DVLA to check the driver’s details after they’ve given their permission.

You and the driver need to complete form D888/1 to do the check.
