Reapply for a driving licence following a health condition
How to reapply
DVLA will send you a letter if your licence was taken away or your application for a driving licence was refused due to a health condition.
The letter will tell you if there’s a period of time you need to wait before you can get a new licence. You can reapply for a licence up to 8 weeks before the end of this period.

There are different rules for when you can drive again if you voluntarily surrendered your licence.
Check with your doctor that you can meet the medical standards for driving before reapplying for your licence.
Car or motorcycle licence
You can reapply for your car or motorcycle licence online or by post.
The letter from DVLA will tell you if you need to send medical evidence of your fitness to drive. If you need to send medical evidence, you must apply by post.
Reapply online
You’ll have one hour to add information once you start. You cannot save and return to your application later.
You can report a health condition at the same time.
Use a different service to:
- renew your short-term medical driving licence if you have one because of a health condition and it is about to expire (or already has)
- check if you need to tell DVLA about a health condition
Reapply by post
To reapply, fill in the form for your health condition and a D1 application form, and send them to DVLA.
Select your health condition to find the right form.
You can get a D1 application form from a Post Office that offers DVLA services. Check if your local Post Office has the D1 form before you visit.
Bus, coach or lorry licence
The letter from DVLA will tell you if you need to send medical evidence of your fitness to drive.
Fill in a D2 application form and the form for your health condition, and send them to DVLA.
Select your health condition to find the right form.
If you’re aged 45 to 65, you also have to fill in a D4 form and send it to DVLA if you have not done so in the past 5 years. Send it in with your D2 form.
Get a D2 or D4 form from a Post Office that offers DVLA services.
From the age of 65, your licence will need to be renewed each year, and your application must be accompanied by a completed D4 medical report form.
Delays if your application is referred to a doctor
Your application may take longer than usual if it needs to be referred to a doctor.
You may be able to drive while DVLA is considering your application if both the following apply:
- you have a current driving licence
- your doctor or optician has not told you that you should not drive
