Get help if HMRC contacts you about a compliance check

Use the online tool throughout a check to guide you through each stage and to access the support available.

A compliance check is when HMRC checks your tax position to make sure you have:

  • paid the right amount of tax at the right time
  • claimed the right allowances and tax reliefs

It is also to make sure that the tax system is operating fairly and effectively.

In a check, HMRC will:

  • send you a letter and request information or documents
  • discuss matters with you to understand your tax position
  • establish the correct tax position for you and close the check
