Access your new Making Tax Digital for Income Tax service after you sign up

How to access your new service and what you can do in your online account.

If you’re a sole trader or landlord, you can access your new Making Tax Digital for Income Tax service through your existing HMRC online account once you’re signed up.  

Agents need to use their agent services account to access this service on behalf of clients signed up to Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. 

For sole traders and landlords 

Sign in to HMRC online services — you will need the sign in details you use for Self Assessment.  

Then select ‘Making Tax Digital for Income Tax’. 

If you cannot access Making Tax Digital for Income Tax as a service, you can add it manually: 

  1. Sign in to your business tax account. 

  2. Select ‘Add a tax to your account’ to get online access to a tax, duty or scheme. 

  3. Select Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. 

  4. Answer the security questions. 

For agents 

Once you are authorised to act on their behalf for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax and your client is signed up, you can access their details from your agent services account.   

What you can do on behalf of your client also depends on whether you are a main or supporting agent.

What you can do in your online account 

In your HMRC online account you can access information about your Making Tax Digital for Income Tax service. You can use it to: 

  • view an estimate of your tax bill  

  • check quarterly update and tax return due dates 

  • view what you need to report for each tax year (your reporting obligations)  

  • check what you owe and make a payment 

  • view your sole trader and property business details 

  • add a new sole trader or property business (in the UK or overseas) 

  • tell us when an income source stops (ceases) 

  • adjust a payment on account 

  • view and appeal penalty points and penalties 

  • opt out if you are voluntarily using Making Tax Digital for Income Tax 

  • sign up for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax if you were previously signed up and opted out
