Providing and updating academy trust governance contacts

Information about notifying ESFA of new and replacement governance roles in academy trusts.

All academy trusts

Academy trusts, including free schools, university technical colleges and studio schools, must notify ESFA about the appointment or vacating of governance roles within their trust.

The Academies Financial Handbook sets out the requirement to provide:

  • information and direct contact details for chair of trustees, chair of local governing bodies, accounting officer and chief financial officer
  • information for member, trustee and local governor

Trusts must notify ESFA within 28 days of opening, and subsequently within 14 days of any changes being made, using the get information about schools (GIAS) service. All fields specified in GIAS for the named individuals must be completed.

Individual academies within trusts should also record their headteacher information on GIAS and keep this up to date.

Notification must be made through the governance section of GIAS which is accessed via Secure Access.

Periodically, we will send information on funding, financial reporting, capital and other important subjects to contacts recorded on GIAS.

Additionally, key members of academies and academy trusts will automatically receive the ESFA Update.
