The public health microbiology service in the South East is provided by the University Hospital of Southampton and Brighton and Sussex University Hospital.
The University Hospital of Southampton was the regional Public Health England (PHE) laboratory until 1 September 2018, when the management of the laboratory was transferred to the University Hospital Southampton Trust.
Southampton is continuing to provide the service for public health microbiology on an interim basis for the South East region - principally serving the Wessex and Thames Valley areas.
The Brighton and Sussex University Hospital is the PHE collaborating centre, and performs the public health microbiology services for the South East region, principally serving the Kent, Surrey and Sussex areas.
Both laboratories provide clinical microbiological testing services to local health trusts, the NHS and general practitioners. The University Hospital of Southampton no longer provides a regional Clostridium difficile ribotyping service as this service has now been relocated to Leeds.
Both laboratories provide a full range of tests in:
- molecular diagnostics
- molecular epidemiology
