Information about the datasets that have been available in the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) Datalab.

The HMRC Datalab Team is working to keep adding new datasets to those available for use in the HMRC Datalab, subject to our data retention and data management policies. If an HMRC dataset is not mentioned on this page, please contact the Datalab team for advice.

The HMRC Datalab allows approved researchers from contracted institutions to access de-identified data in an on-site secure environment.

Compliance Perceptions Survey

The Compliance Perceptions Survey (CPS) measures perceptions of tax compliance among Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) in the United Kingdom. This dataset consists of the data collected from SMEs on behalf of HMRC for the 2011 survey.

Corporation Tax

The dataset consists of Corporation Tax returns or the assessments made from the returns where the accounting period end date falls between 1 April 2001 and 31 March 2015 and which had been received by June 2017.

HMRC Customer Survey

The Customer Survey measures customer experience of dealing with HMRC, and perceptions of the department.

HMRC Individuals, Small Businesses and Agents Customer Survey 2015-2017

The survey asks financial agents, small businesses and individuals about their experience of HMRC over the last year. The dataset consists of survey data collected annually between 2015 and 2017.

HMRC Customer Survey 2008-2015

The survey covered financial agents, small and medium sized enterprises (SME businesses), and individual tax payers and benefit recipients and asked them about their recent dealings with HMRC. The dataset consists of survey data collected quarterly between Quarter 4 2007-8 and Quarter 4 2014-15.

Details of HMRC compliance enquiries (including random audits) into Income Tax Self Assessment and Corporation Tax Self Assessment returns for the tax years 1994/95 to 2009/10. The dataset includes information for:

The PAYE (Pay As You Earn) datasets contain selected variables for a sample of individuals drawn from records held by HMRC in the Computerisation of PAYE (COP) and National Insurance & PAYE Service (NPS) systems. The data includes pay and tax deducted as reported on Form P14 or Form P60 (end of year returns), industry of employment and individual characteristics. Drawn from COP, there is a 5% sample for 2000 to 2001 and a 10% panel sample for 2001 to 2008. From the NPS system which replaced COP from 2008, there is a 10% panel sample for 2008 to 2014.

Self Assessment

Select variables taken from some of the various Self Assessment forms that can be filed with HMRC. This includes information from self-employed, partnerships and short tax returns.

More information about each is available at the link below, with all containing data for financial years from 1997 to 2017. There are additional datasets and lookup tables allowing for matching of the partnership data.

Information on Self Assessment tax calculations (where HMRC sends a calculation of what taxpayers owe or are owed based on the tax return for a specific year) has now also been added for the financial years 2005 to 2017.

Survey of Personal Incomes: Public Use Tape

The Survey of Personal Incomes (SPI) is based on information held by HMRC on individuals who could be liable to UK tax. The UK Data Service currently holds data for the financial year 1985 to 1986, and from 1995 onwards.

Stamp Duty Land Tax

These datasets are based on Stamp Duty Land Tax returns. There is transaction level data for the financial years 2003/04 to 2017/18. HMRC have now also implemented partial postcode information so that the location of transactions can be determined to a greater degree of accuracy.

Tax Opinions Panel Survey

The Tax Opinions Survey aims to explore large businesses’ opinions regarding the administration of current tax policy and changes to legislation, as well as current and potential business behaviour in relation to these. It also looks at wider influences on attitudes and decision-making in relation to tax. The dataset consists of data collected across 2011 to 2013.
