HM Land Registry: How to report an error

We are committed to maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the register. If you think there’s an error in an HM Land Registry document, let us know.

Applies to England and Wales

If you have changed your name or your contact address, or a mortgage on your property has been paid off, you can find out how to update or correct the register, instead of reporting the change as an error.

Errors in a register entry, title plan or copy document

Complete our online form if you believe there’s something wrong with an entry in the register, title plan or copy document. If you prefer, you can telephone or write to us.

Reporting an error online

When completing the online form, provide as much information as you can. This will help us to investigate the error. If possible, include:

  • a title number
  • any HM Land Registry reference
  • documents or evidence relating to the error

Start now

Please note: We do not accept zip files or file sizes in excess of 50MB.

You can also use this form to report an error on a search of the index map.

Report an error by phone or letter

To report an error by phone, ring our Customer Support Centre on 0300 006 0411.

To report an error by post, send your enquiry to one of our standard addresses.

What happens next

We treat all requests to correct errors as a priority. We’ll investigate what’s happened and do what we can to put it right.

We will contact you:

  • if we need more information to investigate the error
  • if we need you to complete a formal application
  • when the error has been corrected

If we can correct the error, the estimated completion time for the process is 20 working days. More complex errors can take longer. If changes are made to a register or title plan, we will supply you with an updated copy.

If we cannot correct the error, we will contact you to explain why and what you can do next.

Who can report an error to HM Land Registry

Anyone can ask for an error to be corrected. However, if you are not the registered proprietor (owner) or you do not have the registered proprietor’s consent, we may ask for more information after you submit your enquiry.

How we’ll use your information

We’ll use the contact information you give us to update and respond to your enquiry. We may also use it to ask you for more information to help us investigate the error.
