Hepatitis C testing and treatment dashboard

Dashboard monitoring hepatitis C virus (HCV) testing and treatment in HCV Operational Delivery Networks (ODNs) in England.

Applies to England

About

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) supports and monitors progress towards the World Health Organisation goal of eliminating hepatitis C virus (HCV) as a major public health threat by 2030. As part of disease surveillance, UKHSA monitors HCV prevention, testing, diagnoses and treatment in England.

In 2015, NHS England (NHSE) established 22 HCV Organisational Delivery Networks (ODNs) to provide uniform and high quality HCV treatment services for their local patients (NHSE ODN service specification). ODNs work in partnership with other health care commissioners, providers and local organisations from all sectors, for example:

  • primary care services
  • local authorities
  • services for people who inject drugs
  • health and justice
  • sexual health services
  • national patient organisation (the Hepatitis C Trust)
  • charities for the homeless and substance misusers

Since 2019, the UKHSA national hepatitis team has provided each ODN with a quarterly testing and treatment data dashboard (commissioned by NHS England and NHS Improvement) to support the ODNs in being responsive to local epidemiology, tailoring services to vulnerable populations, and directing local elimination efforts.

Data sources

UKHSA collates data for the dashboard on testing, diagnosis, treatment and outcome from the following sources:

  • Sentinel Surveillance of Blood Borne Virus (SSBBV) testing
  • routine laboratory reports of HCV diagnoses via Second Generation Surveillance System (SGSS)
  • testing outside traditional services, such as by the Hepatitis C Trust
  • testing recorded in the National Drug Treatment and Monitoring System (NDTMS), provided by Office of Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID)
  • treatment and outcome data through the NHSE national treatment monitoring and outcome registry

Patient identifiers allow for data de-duplication and linkage and enable the patient pathway to be followed through the health care system.

Data outputs

Quarterly dashboards with aggregate data are organised into sections on testing and diagnosis providing information on trends in testing and test positivity, treatment uptake, and re-infection estimates. The dashboard presents data with geo-spatial and service level breakdowns and allow comparison of local performance to the national average.

The dashboards also include appendices with lists of organisations providing services to high risk populations. The organisations include:

  • needle exchange
  • sexual health services
  • general practitioners (GPs) prescribing methadone
  • organisations serving homeless people

How to access

The dashboard is available online via Power BI platform and allows registered users to generate dynamic outputs such as tables, graphs and maps making data more informative and accessible. To request access to the dashboard please contact Hepatitis C Dashboard team at phe.hepcdiagnoses@nhs.net
