DWP CCTV and body worn camera privacy notice

This privacy notice explains how DWP uses CCTV and body worn cameras and how you can request footage of yourself.

Applies to England, Scotland and Wales

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) uses CCTV and body worn cameras (BWCs) for the security of staff, visitors, contractors, information and equipment.

Internal cameras are used to provide security in DWP buildings.

External cameras are used to improve the protection and security of buildings, staff, and public 24 hours a day.

We may also use footage to help prevent and detect crime.

What information we collect

We may capture:

  • images of individuals and activities
  • audio recordings (using BWCs)
  • the location and time of the recordings

This may include personal data and, in some cases, sensitive information depending on the context of the recording.

How long we keep footage

Most CCTV footage is deleted 30 days after it’s recorded.

We can only keep footage for longer than 30 days for specific reasons, for example:

  • to help DWP or the police during an investigation
  • when someone has asked us to restrict processing of their data
  • to help with a legal case
  • to help in a matter of public interest

When the information is no longer required it will be securely deleted.

How footage is stored and accessed

Footage is stored securely and protected against unauthorised access, alteration, or disclosure.

Only authorised members of staff can access footage.

In certain circumstances, DWP may share footage with the police or other organisations where it is necessary, lawful and in the public interest, to do so.

How to request footage of yourself

You have the right to:

  • request footage of yourself captured by CCTV or BWCs
  • request correction or deletion of inaccurate data
  • object to processing in certain circumstances

Find out how to request your personal information from DWP.
