The UK Science and Innovation Network Japan (SIN Japan) builds and promotes strategic collaboration between Japan and the UK on key science, innovation and tech themes.

The Science and Innovation Network Japan is the UK Government’s official representation in Japan on science and innovation. The team is part of the UK’s global Science and Innovation Network of almost 130 officers based in over 60 locations around the world. Responsibilities

SIN Japan goal is to use the collective strength of the UK and Japan to drive forward innovation and growth while delivering real improvements to people’s lives, by supporting the UK to become a science superpower and one of Japan’s top research and technology partners by 2030, through:

  • Identifying opportunities for large-scale science and innovation collaboration focused on the complementary research strengths of the UK and Japan.
  • Facilitating government-to-government discussions to co-create the policy conditions for collaborative innovation.
  • Reporting on Japanese science and innovation activities, including policy and funding opportunities to inform UK policy and programmes.
  • Supporting ministerial and other high-level meetings and visits. We also work closely with our colleagues in the Department for Business and Trade Japan (DBT Japan) and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) to support development of science, innovation and technology-related trade and investment opportunities between Japan and the UK.
  • Promoting the UK as a global hub for scientific breakthroughs, tech innovations and digital services.

  • Emerging technologies, like advanced materials and artificial intelligence
  • Net zero, green energy and earth sciences, like arctic science and clean energy technologies
  • Global Health, like neuroscience and genomics
