Science and innovation are at the heart of government strategy for promoting prosperity and growth. Research and knowledge is increasingly developed and transferred through international collaboration which provides opportunities to work with the best in the world, exchange students and researchers, and gain access to large scale international facilities; leading to mutual benefits for UK and Israel.

Responsibilities

To promote international collaboration on Science and Innovation, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office jointly fund the UK Science and Innovation Network (SIN), based in over 40 countries around the world.

SIN Israel work to the following global objectives:

  • influence science and innovation policies of the Israeli Government, industry and academia to benefit the UK
  • improve UK policy based on international experience and emerging opportunities and challenges with Israel
  • stimulate strategic science collaborations with Israel to benefit the UK and deliver wider policy goals
  • harness Israeli science partnerships and investment to grow UK innovation capability

Priorities

The priorities for UK engagement with Israel are set by the UK-Israel Science Council, a group of 25 leading scientist and policymakers from both countries, chaired by our Ambassador in Israel. The Council and the Bilateral Memorandum of Understanding on Science between the UK and Israel identify these science priorities as Nanoscience, Neuroscience; Regenerative Medicine, Agrisciences and Water Science. Both countries also agreed to focus on researcher mobility and regional collaboration as additional mechanisms to pursue excellence in joint science and research.

Our services

In Israel, SIN is based in the British Embassy in Tel Aviv. We work closely with Department for Business and Trade and Prosperity teams, and with the UK Israel Tech Hub.

For an introductory brief which covers the local Science and Innovation landscape, UK priorities and successes in Israel, read the UK Science and Innovation Network Country Snapshot.

Opportunities

Science and Innovation Network Grants, events and funding opportunities are publicised often on our facebook page, and we chat about them regularly on twitter, too. Join us!

Fellowships

Dozens of British and Israeli researchers participate annually in programmes initiated by the Science & Innovation Network and its partner organisations. In a 3-part series, some of the fellows speak about their experience with our programmes and how it benefited their work.
