Joint efforts to tackle money laundering and terrorist financing

From 8 to 11 February, international experts provided training to over 50 high rank Cuban officials from the Cuban Unit of Financial Intelligence.The event which supported the efforts of the relevant Cuban authorities to comply with the best internacional practice established by GAFI and to tackle money laundering and terrorist financing is the third stage of a joint initiative by the British Embassy, the International Governances and Risk Institute (GovRisk) and Cuba’s Central Bank. This initiative is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

Commenting on the meeting, the British Ambassador in Havana, Tim Cole stated: “I am delighted we are able to give further support to this project now in its third year. Tackling money laundering is an issue faced by every country in the world and the UK is proud of providing technical assistance to Cuba in this area. This is one of the many projects in which the United Kingdom and Cuba have joined efforts to support the updating of Cuban economic model, to boost economic opportunities and to make Cuba a more attractive environment for foreign investment.”
