Deputy British High Commissioner Corin Robertson, Mayor of the Halifax Regional Municipality Mike Savage and Premier of Nova Scotia Stephen McNeil officially opened the consulate with a ceremonial firing of a historic twelve-pound canon and a flypast by a Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) CP-140 Aurora.

The canon firing and the flypast, performed with British crew members onboard who are on exchange with the RCAF and powered by Rolls Royce engines, acted as visual reminder of the strong military links between the UK and Halifax.

Deputy British High Commissioner to Canada Corin Robertson said:

“This week marks not only a celebration of the extensive history between the UK and Canada’s east coast, but also a chance to explore how our governments, businesses and universities can work together in the future.”

The British High Commission in Canada, in partnership with UK Trade & Investment, has opened this temporary office to showcase the strong relationship between Canada and the UK and to strengthen ties within Atlantic Canada. The events being held throughout the week are designed to highlight what makes the UK a cultural hub, as well as a great place to visit and do business.

Highlights for the rest of the week include:

  • a consular open house for British nationals
  • free public tours of Halifax Citadel National Historic Site
  • a British Re-invasion charity concert at the Lower Deck Historic Properties
  • a Science is GREAT event on marine energy at Dalhousie University
  • a study in the UK open house hosted by British Council
  • a British Film night featuring the BAFTA-nominated film ‘The Selfish Giant’
