British Parliamentary Under Secretary of State visits Uzbekistan

The Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Tobias Ellwood MP, paid an official visit to Uzbekistan from 5 to 6 April 2016.

The purpose of the Minister’s visit was to deepen bilateral relations between the UK and Uzbekistan, and to engage in detailed aspects of the political relationship.

During the visit Tobias Ellwood MP met Foreign Minister His Excellency Abdulaziz Komilov, Deputy Foreign Minister Dilyor Khakimov, Defence Minister His Excellency Colonel General Kabul Berdiev, Minister for Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade His Excellency Elyor Ganiev, Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Senator Sodyk Safoyev and Head of the National Human Rights Centre Dr Akmal Saidov.

The Minister also met representatives of British companies in Tashkent, members of the UK Chevening alumni and the students of Westminster International University in Tashkent.

This was Mr Ellwood’s first visit to Uzbekistan in the capacity of Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The last Minister to visit was Senior Minister of State for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Baroness Saida Warsi, in April 2014.

Tobias Ellwood was appointed as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in July 2014. He was elected Conservative MP for Bournemouth East in May 2005. The Minister is responsible for: Middle East and North Africa; Afghanistan and Pakistan; Central Asia; Counter Terrorism; Defence and International Security; and Human Resources.
