Latest provisional statistics for major ports in the UK show that in July to September 2013, port freight traffic (tonnage) fell by 1%, to 123 million tonnes, compared with the same period in 2012.

Annual figures for the year ending September 2013 also showed a fall of 3%, in the amount of freight handled at major UK ports compared to the year ending September 2012.

Other statistics on unitised traffic at UK ports show that during July to September 2013:

  • total unitised traffic increased for the second consecutive quarter, rising by 2% to 6.2 million units handled at UK major ports compared to July to September 2012

However, for the year ending September 2013:

  • total unitised traffic remained stable at 20.9 million units in comparison to the previous 12 month period
