This is the fifth publication of these statistics using the current methodology, using changes in Ordnance Survey products rather than from the physical observations that informed the previous series.

It provides estimates for 2017 to 2018 on the creation and deletion of residential addresses and on changes in land usage (as expressed in numbers of hectares).

The department has also published a consultation paper on proposed changes to the department’s land use change statistics.

It is accompanied by an experimental statistical release on land use in England, 2017, with tables showing the amounts of land within individual use categories at national and local levels.
