Details

When a claimant first applies for Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) they are put into the assessment phase. The assessment phase is the time between a claim commencing and a decision on whether a claimant has either limited capability for work, or is fit for work.

This ad hoc statistical release shows the numbers of ESA claims where the assessment phase lasted either up to 13 weeks or longer than 13 weeks between January 2011 and Februaruy 2012.

It also shows average durations of the assessment phase for initial ESA claims where the work capability assessment took place between October 2008 and February 2012.
