Statistics on freight moved within the UK by water transport.

In 2017:

  • coastwise traffic fell by 26% to 16.2 billion tonne kilometres
  • one-port traffic increased by 2% to 7.5 billion tonne kilometres
  • inland waters traffic increased by 2% to 1.6 billion tonne kilometres

The total amount of goods moved for all domestic waterborne freight declined by 18% to 24.9 billion tonne kilometres compared to 2016.

From 2019 onwards, we plan to include the annual domestic waterborne freight release as a chapter within the annual port freight statistics. There would be no separate domestic waterborne freight release. We always appreciate any feedback and contributions to the development of our statistical series. If you have any comments or questions regarding this change or any other aspect of the domestic waterborne freight statistics, please contact us by email or phone 07966 513116.
