The data is collected by the museums through sample surveys, with the exception of the information on educational visits and total visits, which are based on actual counts.

The highlight data for 2009-2010
Total visits: There were 42.2 million visits to 17 of the Department’s sponsored museums in 2009/10. The following chart shows visit numbers by museum. Chart 1: 2009/10 total visits by museum
Child visits: There were 8.6 million visits by children under 16 in 2009-10, representing 20% of all visits. The following chart shows child visit numbers by museum.Chart 2: 2009/10 Number of visits by children under 16, by museum
Overseas visits: There were 15.4 million visits in 2009/10, representing 37% of all visits. Chart 3a-3b: Percentage of overseas and UK visits in 2008/09 and 2009/10
Visits by adults from lower socioeconomic groups:** 3.9 million visits in 2009/10. The following chart shows visit numbers by museum. Chart 4: visits by adults aged 16 and over from NS-SEC groups 5-8, by museum.
Number of UK loan venues: In 2009/10 there were loans to 1,777 UK venues by DCMS sponsored museums and galleries. Chart 5: Number of loans to UK venues by museum. Please note that due to the terms of their bequest, the Wallace Collection cannot lend items from its collection.
