Details

Main trends for reviews of marking and moderation for GCSE, AS and A level for the summer 2019 exam series were:

  1. Percentage of all GCSE grades awarded that were challenged decreases: 5.4% of all GCSE grades awarded were challenged (down from 5.5% in 2018). Percentage of all GCSE grades that were changed remains at 1.1%. The percentage of GCSE grades challenged that were changed increases to 20.2% (from 20.1% in 2018).
  2. Percentage of A level grades awarded that were challenged and changed increases: 8.1% of all A level grades awarded were challenged and 1.7% of all A level grades were changed (up from 7.0% and 1.5% in 2018, respectively). The percentage of A level grades challenged that were changed decreases to 20.3% (from 20.9% in 2018).
  3. Percentage of AS level grades awarded that were challenged and changed increases: 2.4% of all AS level grades were challenged and 0.6% changed (up from 1.7% and 0.4% in 2018, respectively). The percentage of AS level grades challenged that were changed increases to 23.7% (from 21.9% in 2018).
  4. The percentage of reviews for GCSE and GCE resulting in no mark change increases from 62.3% in 2018 to 63% in 2019.
  5. The most commonly challenged GCSE grades were grade 3 (24.8% of GCSE 9 to 1 grades challenged) and grade 4-3 (16.8% of GCSE combined science grades challenged), and the most commonly challenged GCE grade was grade B (33% of GCE grades challenged)
