Details

The adult mental health and wellbeing profile:

  • supports understanding of adult mental health and wellbeing at a local level
  • supports an intelligence-based approach to service planning, commissioning and delivery
  • provides a set of indicators that allow planners, providers and stakeholders to profile their area and benchmark against similar populations

The April 2026 update includes a new indicator on model-based estimated prevalence of severe mental illness (SMI) and condition groups (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and other psychosis) for England and local areas. This new indicator is accompanied by a report, including details on:

  • main findings and interpretations of the estimates
  • how the modelled estimates were derived
  • comparison of the estimates with other data on SMI
  • guidance on how to use the estimates

The profile also includes:

  • 4 updated indicators on mental health and one on smoking cessation from the Quality and Outcomes Framework (counties and unitary authorities, and statistical regions only)
  • 3 updated indicators on substance misuse treatment (England and local areas)

The adult mental health and wellbeing profile is classified as official statistics in development.
