Details
This report sets out and comments on abortion statistics in England and Wales for 2022 and provides an update to the ad hoc publication Abortion statistics for England and Wales: January to June 2022.
The statistics are obtained from the abortion notification forms returned to the chief medical officers of England and Wales.
Correction notice
The labelling of abortions by method has been updated. See the ‘Revisions’ tab of ‘Abortion statistics 2022: additional data tables (amended)’ for full details of the changes.
Since the statistics were first published in May 2024, we have published 3 sets of corrections (in December 2024, April 2025 and January 2026).
The corrections are listed in full in the attachment ‘Corrections made to abortion statistics, England and Wales: 2022’.
Correction notices have also been added to the ‘data tables’ and ‘additional data tables’ spreadsheets. Some of the data in these tables has been amended.

Data in several tables has been corrected following a full review of the publication. The accompanying commentary has been updated with the revised figures. Added new HTML attachment 'Corrections made to abortion statistics, England and Wales: 2022', which includes full details of all the changes made.

Updated 'Abortion statistics, England and Wales: 2022' to correct the figures quoted in the section 'Abortion rates by index of multiple deprivation deciles', and to remove the analysis for Wales' abortion statistics. Also updated 'Abortion statistics 2022: data tables (amended)' with the revised figures, and ‘Guide to abortion statistics, England and Wales: 2022’ to reflect these changes.
