The Environment Agency has received a new bespoke application for an environmental permit under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 from CELLSAFEUK Ltd.

Bespoke Environmental Permit for a metals recycling site - mixed metals, that will process a maximum of 3,120 tonnes per annum (not exceeding 10 tonnes per day) of non-hazardous alkaline batteries. The activities on site will comprise of the batteries being fed into a feed hopper and a shaker bed, before being shredded and screened. Storage and treatment of the batteries will take place within a building. When the non-hazardous batteries are treated - in this case shredded - it changes the nature of waste and creates hazardous waste. The content of batteries ‘black mass’ is hazardous due to the metals and chemistry of the materials, and this will be stored within sealed containers.
