Whether the SIA recognises any canine security associations

Published 27 March 2025

Request

Can you please tell me if any private sector canine governing bodies such as the National Association of Security Dog Users (NASDU) or the National Training Inspectorate of Professional Dog Users (NTIPDU) or any other associations or self-appointed bodies are formally recognised by the Security Industry Authority (SIA)?

Response

The SIA does not hold this information.

The SIA has consulted with a stakeholder from NASDU on one occasion; however, the SIA does not formally recognise associations or self-appointed bodies.

The SIA is the organisation responsible for regulating the private security industry in the UK, reporting to the home secretary under the terms of the Private Security Industry Act 2001. We license individuals, not businesses. Our purpose is to protect the public and monitor the activities and effectiveness of people who undertake operations to provide security industry services. We also set and approve standards of conduct and training.

Security companies may wish to join our Approved Contractor Scheme (ACS), a voluntary quality-assurance scheme aimed at promoting standards of security in the industry. You can read more about the ACS here: Applying for ACS approval: guidance and forms - GOV.UK. You can also view our register of approved contractors.
