Volume

The proposed variation is to transfer effluent from collection ponds at the construction sites located at Chalfont St Peter shaft, Chalfont St Giles shaft, Amersham shaft, Little Missenden shaft, Chesham Road shaft and North Portal to storage ponds at the South Portal compound and to treat this using the existing permitted wastewater treatment plant (WTP). In addition, the variation includes collection and treatment of contaminated runoff water from a chalk stockpile at the southern end of the viaduct which would be pumped to the WTP along the pipe used for dewatered cofferdam effluent at the viaduct and which is already included in the WTP permit. The additional effluent transfer would be temporary and intermittent with the volume depending upon incident rainfall and construction activities. Attenuation of the additional effluent inputs would be by the WTP ponds and at the additional sites where storage ponds have been constructed. If the WTP at South Portal is likely to reach capacity (e.g. weather forecast predicts extended period of high rainfall) effluent would be retained at the additional construction sites rather than being transferred to the WTP at South Portal. If necessary, short term tankering to off-site treatment works from the additional sites would continue to be undertaken to manage excess effluent. There would be no changes to the WTP, operating techniques, storage ponds, emissions or discharge points at the South Portal with all effluent being managed through the existing plant and existing discharge limit.
