FOI - Purchase prices for veterinary medicines
Published 5 January 2026
ATI1113 Request
I am seeking the prices that veterinary practices, wholesale suppliers, retail suppliers and any other suppliers of veterinary medicines pay as their purchase prices.
I am also seeking the details of the EC/EU equivalent of the VMD.
Our reply
The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) is the authority responsible for regulating and authorising veterinary medicines in the UK but does not have any control over the fees and charges applied to veterinary medicines or services.
Veterinary medicine is a private service including the supply of medicinal products; the costs charged by individual veterinary practices vary widely due to the variable business models and overheads incurred. The Government does not regulate the cost of medicines and is not informed of the prices of individual products. The cost of a veterinary medicinal product is controlled by market forces.
Each European Member State will have an equivalent medicines regulator, details of each can be found here: Heads of Medicines Agencies: National Contacts. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is the pan-EU medicines regulator: European Medicines Agency (EMA)
