FOI - LA-MRSA in people

Published 30 October 2025

ATI1084 Request

In the November 2024 minutes of Defra’s DARC committee it says that:

“UKHSA provided an update on livestock-associated methicillin- resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) at DARC for the first time, as part of enhanced One Health surveillance for AMR.”

Please could you let me know what information was shared by UKHSA at this meeting about LA-MRSA, including any documentation about this topic that was shared with the committee

Our reply

We agree that this information should be made publicly available. However, after careful consideration, we conclude that the Section 22 FOIA exemption applies because the public interest is best served by publishing the information, as planned, within the contextual narrative of the UK AMR One Health Report.

The UK AMR One Health Report is a regular surveillance report jointly produced by the UKHSA and VMD. It presents the results of UK surveillance of antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial consumption in people and animals in a ‘one health’ context. The information on LA-MRSA in people provided by the UKHSA referred to in the November 2024 DARC minutes is intended for publication in the future edition of the AMR One Health Report which covers the relevant time period in which these isolates were reported. UK AMR One Health Reports are published every 2 years. The report currently under preparation covers data from 2014 to 2023.
