FOI2026/00349 – Availability of Masivet 150 mg (masitinib)
Published 22 May 2026
Your request
In this context, I would like to obtain, if possible, precise information from your agency:
* Is Masivet 150 mg (masitinib) currently commercialised in the United Kingdom?
* Does this medicine hold a marketing authorisation in the United Kingdom?
* If so, is it effectively available in pharmacies / through usual distribution channels?
* If not, is this a temporary shortage or a permanent discontinuation?
* Do you have any estimate regarding a potential resupply date?
Furthermore, should a pharmacy in the United Kingdom have this product in stock, would it be possible for them to dispense it on the basis of a Belgian veterinary prescription?
Our reply
Masivet 150 mg (masitinib) is listed within the VMD’s Product Information Database (PID) as a prescription only veterinary medicine (POM-V). You can search for this product here https://www.gov.uk/check-animal-medicine-licensed.
The PID provides information on whether a veterinary medicine holds a valid UK marketing authorisation, along with the authorisation holder, product details, and any additional regulatory information. This is the most reliable and up‑to‑date source for confirmation of the legal status of veterinary medicines in the UK.
The VMD does not hold information on, nor regulate, the commercialisation, stock levels, or availability of products on the UK market. Manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers determine whether a product is marketed or discontinued.
The VMD have not been notified there is a current supply issue with Masivet 150 mg.
Suppliers of veterinary medicines, including veterinary practices and pharmacies, in the UK may only dispense veterinary medicines listed as POM-V in accordance with the UK’s Veterinary Medicines Regulations (VMR). This means for supply within the UK, the supplier must be presented with a valid UK veterinary prescription, issued by a practicing vet registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS).
If a prescription is not a valid UK one, a vet can still choose to follow it as an order to export outside of the UK, subject to the standard export requirements under Regulation 31 of the VMR:
Paragraph 1 of this regulation states: ‘No person may export a veterinary medicinal product for use in another country unless the veterinary medicinal product may be lawfully supplied or administered in that country.’
This is the only restriction in the VMR for exporting veterinary medicines. If a supplier wishes to export to another country, we advise they check with the authorities that the product can be legally sold and supplied in that country and what their requirements are for import certification. Please note, the medicine must be sent directly, it cannot be supplied to another person in the UK to travel with them to the country.
