FOI2026/00340 – Cancer medicine usage across the UK
Published 22 May 2026
Your request
If possible, is there information regarding the distribution, volume and type of cancer treatment medicines of domesticated animals in the UK.
Our reply
The Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) is responsible for the authorisation of veterinary medicines in the UK. This means we assess and license medicines to ensure they meet the required standards of safety, quality and efficacy before they can be marketed.
However, the VMD does not regulate, monitor or collect data on the supply, distribution, usage or volumes of veterinary medicines once authorised. We therefore do not hold information on the amount or types of cancer treatment medicines used in pets or livestock in the UK.
All veterinary medicines that are authorised for use in the UK are publicly listed in our Product Information Database (PID). This includes information such as active substances, species indications and product classifications. You can access the PID here: https://www.gov.uk/check-animal-medicine-licensed.
This database may help you identify which cancer‑treatment‑related products are authorised in the UK, although it does not include any information on supply volumes or usage.
