Social rented sector: reporting October 2018 rent changes: advice for landlords

Updated 5 March 2019

For social sector rent changes due in October 2018, DWP will continue with the processes introduced in April 2017.

1. Universal Credit full service

Claimants in Universal Credit (UC) full service areas are responsible for reporting their rent changes using their online account. They cannot report rent changes until the change happens.

Remind your full service tenants of the information we need and that they should report rent changes on their UC account.

2. Universal Credit live service

Claimants in UC live service areas are responsible for reporting rent changes to the Universal Credit helpline.

As live service claimants cannot report changes online, social landlords in England, Scotland and Wales can voluntarily report annual rent changes for their tenants who are claiming UC housing costs.

3. How to report rent changes in live service areas

Social landlords can voluntarily report October 2018 rent changes to DWP from 1 September 2018 to 31 October 2018. Any requests received after this date will not be actioned.

Only include tenants living in UC live service areas. If you do not know whether a tenant is living in a live service area, include them in the spreadsheet. DWP will only process changes for tenants living in live service areas.

Please include all the information requested in the spreadsheet, otherwise rent or service charges may be calculated incorrectly.

3.1 How to send the spreadsheet

Social landlords are responsible for deciding whether they can share this data with DWP and any information is shared at their own risk.

Email the completed spreadsheet to UC.servicecentrehousing@dwp.gsi.gov.uk

In the subject field of the email, include the region and the name of the social landlord organisation. For example:

  • North East (Gemini Housing Association)
  • Scotland (Taurus Housing Association)
  • Wales (Pisces Local Authority)

DWP will acknowledge receipt by return email. Please do not send duplicate information.

3.2 If no change is reported

UC Live Service claimants will not be prompted to report annual changes where they or their social landlord has not reported a change.
