This note is for use alongside the FCDO guide: understanding institutional analysis. It explains how to use institutional and functional analysis to improve the design of technical assistance programmes within international co-operation.
The note discusses differing approaches to technical assistance and sets out the main principles for ‘smart technical assistance’. Smart technical assistance aims to maximise the contribution of technical assistance towards the capacity-building aims of partners.
