The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is responsible for protecting public health in the UK, supporting global efforts to improve public health and has been world-leading at implementing pathogen genomics services to do this.
The UKHSA Pathogen Genomics Strategy will:
- target international, national and regional public health priorities
- develop accredited, resilient genomic services for target priority pathogens
- communicate information that leads to improved clinical care and outcomes for individual patients
- provide demonstrable public health benefit
- deliver a cost-effective service, to provide value for money
- share infrastructure and expertise throughout and beyond the organisation
This strategy sets out how we will implement a programmatic approach to pathogen genomics in the future. This includes governance and oversight mechanisms for reporting the impact of this work upwards and outwards, staff training and retention, cross-team working, and accountability to ensure the benefit to public health is maximised.
