July 2026 BSTG meeting notes

Published 22 July 2026

The UK NSC Blood Spot Task Group (BSTG) met on 15 July 2026.

The meeting was chaired by David Elliman and included representatives from the voluntary sector, UK NSC secretariat, NHS England, Genomics England and the UK’s rare disease registration services.

The only item on the agenda was the proposed multi-condition in-service evaluation (ISE) of screening for rare conditions within the newborn blood spot screening programme. Its purpose would be to address evidence gaps to help the UK NSC make recommendations about adding new conditions to the screening programme.

BSTG members were updated on the progress of this project. They strongly supported the concept of evaluating many conditions at the same time and had a wide-ranging and detailed discussion about the principles and practices that could underpin this work.

The group will be updated further on progress at its next meeting.
