Appendix 3: Algorithm for decision making for initiation of public health TB contact investigation

Published 6 October 2026

Notes:

  1. This is a discretionary decision by the HPT and or TB service for non-pulmonary TB. There may be situations where it is decided to contact trace for non-pulmonary TB to identify the source of active cases in wider social groups or other settings, depending on the local epidemiology of TB.
  2. At a minimum this should include parents and caregivers in the first instance - as per British Association for Paediatric Tuberculosis (BAPT) guidance.
  3. Consider other risk factors such as duration and nature of symptoms, time to culture, evidence of transmission to household contacts and vulnerability of contacts to inform risk assessment.
