These briefings published in 2017 examine the place and cause of death for permanent and temporary residents of care homes.

Briefing 1 describes the availability of residential and nursing home places, older population needs and the number of deaths.

Briefing 2 describes demographic trends in people who receive end of life care in care homes.

Useful indicators under ‘Care homes and community’ are available on Palliative and end of life care profiles. This includes 3 indicators on care homes:

Results of a national survey of support to adult care homes in England: a specialist palliative care provider perspective was published in 2017. This report presents the findings of a survey of organisations who provide specialist palliative care services to care homes. It highlights the good work they do and identifies the challenges they face. The report examines the role of specialist palliative care in providing support to care homes in England.
