The Case for Space is a research report prepared for the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) by know.space, capturing the economic value of space, the benefit to the UK of space activities, and the rationale and market failures that underpin government intervention in the space sector.

There is a strong focus within the report on how space contributes to the UK, clarifying the end-user benefits that have resulted from successful space investments. This information is brought out through the use of 6 case studies, on the following topics:

  • the role of the UK launch industry in levelling up
  • space weather forecasting to ensure resilience of critical national infrastructures
  • enhancing connectivity across the UK through OneWeb
  • position, navigation and timing for routing emergency services to citizens in need
  • commercialising revolutionary UK technologies with Reaction Engines
  • using earth observation capabilities for automated monitoring within the UK farming and food industry
