Details of the application

Tarmac Trading Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for two licences.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a full licence to abstract water from an underground strata comprising of sands and gravels from an excavation area at Kingsnorth Quarry, Hoo St. Werburgh in Rochester, Kent. The excavation area is between National Grid References (NGR) TQ 79002 72783, TQ 79741 73221, TQ 80742 71823 and TQ 79549 71319. Water will be transferred to a lake at Kingsnorth Quarry between NGR TQ 79458 72500 and TQ 79595 72226 without intervening use or into a drainage tributary of the River Medway at NGR TQ 80029 72291 with intervening use at TQ 79687 72308 for the purpose of mineral washing.

The application is to abstract water as follows:

  • 218.88 cubic metres an hour
  • 898.56 cubic metres a day
  • 107,826.60 cubic metres a year
  • between 1 January and 30 April inclusive in each year.

The area to be included within the transfer licence is within the boundaries of the Medway and Marshes Estuary SSSI, Ramsar, SPA and Medway Estuary Marine Conservation Zone. Both of the proposed licences are within the Medway Abstraction Licensing Strategy area.
