The proposal is to vary the permit to amend or remove the conditions relating to the design and operation of the Acoustic Fish Deterrent (AFD) system.

The original permit was granted in 2013 and permitted the discharge of trade effluent consisting of returned abstracted cooling water (Waste stream A). The original design proposed for the cooling water system required the company to abstract and discharge this cooling water using three measures which would work together to reduce the environmental impact of this activity. The measures included in the original permit were a Low Velocity Side Entry intake (LVSE), a Fish Recovery & Return (FRR) system and an Acoustic Fish Deterrent (AFD) system.

The Company no longer wants to install the Acoustic Fish Deterrent (AFD) system and therefore it is applying to vary its current permit to remove the conditions related to this measure.

Please note that this consultation relates to the permit variation application documents. We must decide whether to grant or refuse the permit variation application. If we grant it, we must decide what conditions to include in the permit and we will run a further public consultation if we reach this stage.

The Company will also be making applications for amendments to the Development Consent Order (DCO) authorising construction of the power station (Order 2013: S.I. 2013:248), and for a variation of the marine licence covering construction of the Cooling Water System lying below the water level (licence number L201300178/3).

Separate consultation routes will be advertised and made available by the Company and Competent Authorities in relation to these applications. These are likely to run in parallel with this permit variation application. You can find out more about the company’s pre-application consultation on the Development Consent Order (DCO) at https://www.edfenergy.com/AFDconsultation
